Glass was first documented to be created around 3000 BC in the bronze age by Egyptian craftsmen. However shards of glass have been found dating all the back to 7000 BC, where they have been unearthed in Egypt and Iraq. The Egyptians were believed to have developed a reliable system for glass making. This process evolved from ceramics and metal working techniques, with glass taking it’s place along with gold and silver as precious material. By the first millennium BC many basic glass fusing and slumping techniques have been developed in Syria, Egypt, Persia, and Rome. At that time glass was considered a very rare commodity and precious.
The earliest stained glass window to have survived intact is an 11th century AD face of Christ. Originally installed in the Wissembourg Abbey, it is now on display in a museum in Strasbourg, Germany.
One of my passions is glass craft.
Here are some samples of work I have done with both stained glass and fusion glass. Be sure to <LEFT> click on each image to enlarge!
